Sir Alex Ferguson has shot down claims the last four years have been a golden period in the Champions League for Manchester United.
The old sage of management has guided the Red Devils to two of the last three finals in the showpiece European competition, only to lose out to Barcelona on both occasions.Despite those setbacks, it has still been one of United's most productive times in the competition as they look to cement their place amongst Europe's greatest teams.
Ferguson, though, believes because of these losses, this spell will not be looked back on as fondly as it could have been.
"The Champions League is the best competition in the world right now, better than the World Cup, better than the European Championships, it is a fantastic tournament," he said."But it's not a golden period for us because we have lost two finals, so I don't think it can be called a golden period.
"We have been consistent in the Champions League, our form away from home has been outstanding and we hope we can do better this year and win it, that's the aim for this club all the time."
