Vladimir Vermezovic says Itumeleng Khune must not shoulder the blame for Kaizer Chiefs’ 1-0 loss in the MTN8 Final on Saturday night.
Khune appeared to have misjudged Oupa Manyisa’s strike from 30 metres out, but Vermezovic says it is pretty much misguided opinion to lay the blame on Khune, who was critical of his ball watching defence at the post-match interview.
Vermezovic said: “My philosophy is that a goalkeeper is never guilty for [conceding] a goal, never! If 10 players in front of him can’t stop a guy from scoring then he can’t do anything.
“It was the biggest mistake of our players to wait for a cross and no-one came out to block Oupa’s shot. We knew he took a shot like that against Sundowns [in the semifinals] and it was our biggest mistake not blocking him,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Serbian admitted that his side had lost to a better team on the night.
"Pirates deserved to win the Final... Their defence was very good," he added.
