But Dalglish believes it is not simply the club’s captain who will be lifted by his gradual return to fitness, with the Liverpool manager confident his presence on the training pitch – let alone in competitive action – is the sort of fillip the rest of his squad will cherish.
“The thing with Steven is that if he is around the football club and in the squad, fit and available, it does not half strengthen the squad,” Dalglish said.
“For the players who have come in this summer, they have not really seen him train or play. Some may have played against him, but some have not. They have got a bit of treat to look forward to.
“The most important thing for us is to continue the way we have done so far. To make sure we are responsible enough to get him through this and move him forward.
