So much for Kenny Dalglish’s 'chat’ with referees chief Mike Riley. He left White Hart Lane having watched, incredulous, as two of his players were sent off and his side utterly dismantled by Tottenham Hotspur.
Inside there may have been a white-hot sense of injustice at White Hart Lane but to the Liverpool manager’s credit he rightly refused to blame referee Mike Jones, though he did state that it was “best left unsaid” what he truly felt about the official.
“The football club expects more than a 4-0 defeat,” Dalglish added with a face etched with wounded pride.
“Whatever we say would take away from a great performance by Tottenham. How we started the game we would still have lost anyway irrespective of what then happened.”
He was right. But he will take no pleasure in that. What happened was astonishing. His team were ill-disciplined, disorganised, shambolic. And, also, badly set up. Dalglish will take his share of the blame for that and there will be a team post-mortem tomorrow .
