Speaking a day after the Croatian joined with Emmanuel Adebayor to mastermind a 4-0 destruction of Liverpool, the Tottenham manager said: “If he is worth £40 million then life tells you you’ve got to be paid accordingly.
"You can’t say he’s worth £40 million and then pay him the wages of someone who’s worth £5 million.
“We’ve got to convince him that his future is here and make it right for the boy.
"That’s only fair and I’m sure the chairman will be fair and make sure he does that. Hopefully, we can come to a good compromise, we will all move on and Luka will be happy in the future again.”
