Andre Villas-Boas' youth is no excuse for naive Chelsea tactics against Manchester United

It was a mistake, pure and simple, and the Portuguese is not at the sort of club where he has time and space to lear
Not that there is any excuse: even at 33, even in his first season in England, Villas-Boas should have known you do not line up wide open against the Premier League champions. Jose Mourinho would not have done so. Carlo Ancelotti would not have done so.
The approach that has stood Chelsea in better stead than most at Old Trafford in recent years has been the same one Sir Alex Ferguson always employs against his direct rivals: the first thought is always that if you do not lose a goal, you do not lose a game.
Chelsea abandoned that yesterday. They may have created a dozen good chances, they may have played a full part in an enthralling, exciting showcase for the Premier League, but they were 3-0 down at half-time. They lost control. That is what Ferguson craves more than anything. That is what he sets out his Manchester United sides to grab. Control. If you play wide open, you are voluntarily ceding it, admitting that either team could win.
