Teko divided Pirates says Juju

Teko Modise is enjoying a positive start to his season for Mamelodi Sundowns, but at his former club Orlando Pirates his presence is certainly not being missed, according to former teammate Thulasizwe Mbuyane.

In an exclusive interview with KICK OFF magazine, ‘Juju’ reveals that Modise was a divisive influence in the Buccaneers camp, and says his departure signaled a change of fortune for the club.

“Immediately after a certain guy left things started working out well for us,” Mbuyane says. When asked who the 'certain guy' was, Mbuyane answered, "Teko."

He adds: “When I first started playing at Pirates there was this element of individualism … but things have changed and that’s one of the reasons we are doing well."

Mbuyane is quick to credit former Pirates coach Ruud Krol for making the brave decision to sell Modise, despite criticism from fans.

“I take my hat off to Ruud Krol … he put his head on the block and said he only wanted to work with players who want to play for the team; it’s been working very well since he put his foot down,” he says.

Mbuyane says Modise had his own group within the team – which included Katlego Mashego and Dennis Masina – and tried to bring him into the group when he first joined.

“You know, Katlego and Dennis became team players when he [Modise] left … when I came he was trying to make sure I was always with him, but I was always with the boys from the development team.”
