It was a case of the students becoming the teachers as Wits put on an unreal performance to hammer Orlando Pirates 3-1 at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
The match started at a frantic pace as both sides looked to settle. Wits were brilliant on defence though and gave the Sea Robbers no time on the ball.
On top of that, they were good in possession and full of running upfront. Despite this, Pirates did have the first real chance of the half when Rudolph Bester played Mark Mayambela in on goal but he sent his effort straight at Energy Murambadoro.
The visitors would then be stunned in the 20th minute when Asive Langwe played a sublime cross to the far post where the Pirates defenders were caught ball watching as Sibusiso Vilakazi slipped in to nod the ball home.
The hosts took full control after the goal as the Bucs struggled to hold onto the ball. Tlou Segolela made a couple of dangerous runs but Pirates failed to produce the killer pass.
Bester then had a goal ruled out for offside before Vilakazi nodded a chance over the bar with eight minutes left in the half.
Pirates made a late push and almost bagged an equaliser late on but Mayambela had a shot deflected wide of the target as Wits went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
It was a case of more of the same after the interval and Wits would go on to double their lead just seconds in when Ryan Chapman turned brilliantly before lashing the ball into the top corner.
Pirates were reeling and struggled to respond to the brilliant Wits side and things would get even worse for the visitors when Chapman wrapped up his brace by running onto a cross at the near post before guiding it home in the 65th minute.
Happy Jele then saw his game come to an abrupt and horrific end when he suffered what looked to be a broken leg after a Wits player fell onto his knee at pace and his leg bent horribly, leaving him down on the pitch. He was swiftly replaced by Bheki Nzulga.
Pirates pressed in the final few minutes as they tried to bag a consolation goal and it would come in the 88th minute when Tokelo Rantie beat his defender on the wing and powered a cross into the six-yard area where Siyabonga Sangweni tapped home.
It was too little too late though as Wits held on for a deserved win and moved up into seventh place on the league table, just ahead of Pirates.
